10 June, Friday Dar es Salaam 20!
It is Andrej’s birthday – 20 years old!
We pack up and put our stuff away, pile in the car to go to a
mall where Willie wants to see if he can replace our dead GPS and I need to
stock up on food supplies since we are getting ready for the road again. The
mall is big with such familiar stores: Game, Shoprite, Truworths, Mr Price –all
South African stores. It gives me a pang in my heart, because I feel I should be
home, but we are not.
Willie finds a GPS for a very reasonable price
and all of us are happy. It is almost sad to discover how dependent we are or
have become on modern technology, but that is the case. The GPS has become such
a reliable source to lean on when you are tired, and you want to find your camp
site - with the correct way points
and you are there in no time. Andrej can choose his birthday dinner which will
be homemade hamburgers and the 3 of us enjoy walking through a store with
stocked shelves. I cannot imagine going to the store without the boys – they’ve
really helped me so much.
The new GPS lady takes us back to the camp on a
different road in 1/3 of the time! I do more laundry and Hugo and Andrej as well
- probably for the 3rd
time on the trip and in no time. I have no idea how they do it – drag it through
the water and hang it dripping wet on the line?
Andrej comes back with exciting news: our friends from England,
the Brits, are actually in Dar es Salaam in a neighboring camp! He and Hugo run
to the camp and yes, their car is there, but they are in Zanzibar. They leave a
note on the windshield and 8:30 pm 2 people walk into our campsite– Rob and his
dad, Peter! They got the note and the best news was that they’ve decided to move
camp and they are joining us.
We have a wonderful evening – celebrate Andrej’s birthday with
good friends!
