3 May, Tuesday   leaving Addis    (Kristi’s birthday)

Willie found the coordinates for an internet café and we decide to try it. We are behind with communication, newsletters and business stuff. It is a little bit scary in how dependent one has become on the fast cyber networking. No more disappearing for months in deep dark Africa as in the past. With the click of the button and Skype I can speak to my mom in Cape Town…!

We find a decent speed internet café and I am happy that I can finally post almost 2 weeks of journal entries with a few pictures. Once we have high speed I will supplement with more pictures. I am sad that in the rush to post I did not realize while in the café that it is Kristi’s birthday. Happy birthday to our special daughter whom we love and miss so much!

Andrej also speaks to his parents and sister and with our communication needs satisfied we leave Addis after 2pm – much later than anticipated. Andrej and I go to a supermarket to stock up on supplies while Hugo goes to buy us lunch at ‘In-Out Burger’. He comes back staggering under the weight of 2 bags of food. We eat the best biggest tastiest burgers we all agree we’ve ever had. It is delayed gratification for Hugo after his disappointment at Twilight Restaurant in Moto!

Willie has the waypoint of a camping place at Lake Langano – 3 hours south of Addis. We try to read Willie’s notes, stored on the computer, when we approach a town or place where we want to spend the night. It gives us directions, what to expect of rooms and prices and has been invaluable when it’s getting dark and we have no idea where to go.

Andrej reads the notes on what to expect of our next campsite: “clean campsite on the banks of Lake Langano; shade, basic toilet, no showers, very private with no one to bother! That sounds too good to be true… It is late afternoon when we reach the camp. We pass through a barrier and drive down to where the campsite is…big shady trees, soft sand on the banks of the lake, barbecue pits and NO ONE ELSE to be seen! We are excited when we pitch our camp. This is going to be grand after Addis with all its people and busyness.

About 200 meter down the beach we notice that the fishermen are pulling their nets in. Willie and Hugo walk down and buy us freshly caught Tilapia – 7 fish for 10 birr (less than $1!) We soon have a fire going on which we grill our delicious catch. The rest of the evening is spent quietly under the stars with the soft murmur of the waves as it spreads out over the pebbles on the shore. We go to bed happy and ready to explore our new surroundings in the morning.

"There is something about safari life that makes you forget all your sorrows and feel as if you had drunk half a bottle of champagne - bubbling over with heartfelt gratitude for being alive. One only feels really free when one can go in whatever direction one pleases over the plains, to get to the river at sundown and pitch one's camp, with the knowledge that one can fall asleep
beneath other trees, with another view before one, the next night." -
Karen Blixen - Out of Africa, Kenya
'Of course as I am reading this, I know that you DO get your visas and the container DOES get released, but oh the internal struggle we face even though we should trust (as Hugo does) that God has His hands on all things and is constantly taking care of us.'

    From a Friend:
:) Crazy to think that we are ALL made of blood, bone and water yet we speak in so many tongues that getting along together becomes a massive task within itself.
