8 April, Aswan From Dust Pit to Old Faithful

As we are getting ready to pack an Arab man walks over and introduces himself as the owner of the land where we camped. He joins us for tea and we have a great conversation as he speaks very good English. He tells us that the sand unloaded by the trucks is to be used for the construction of a hotel on an island. Boats will carry the sand to the site which explains why it was dropped at the water’s edge.

I put a few pieces of clothing in a bucket of water to soak overnight and left it at the edge of the river. I’m not sure what happened but it was gone when I woke up – maybe the wake, caused by boats passing, which carried it away? Fortunately it was only 3 or 4 t-shirts and a few other pieces. I’m sad about my bucket though…I really liked it!

We drive back to what Willie called our Old Faithful campsite. It is not very clean, but there is grass, it is right by the river’s edge and we feel quite safe. It is also close to a bridge which lit up beautifully during the nights and it is fun watching the luxury ferries pass by carrying tourists between Luxor and Aswan.

In Cairo Willie was Hugo’s barber and here in Aswan, on the banks of the Nile it was Andrej’s turn. We spend a lazy day lying under the tree, reading, sleeping and Willie takes care of a few important car maintenance tasks. We watch the ferries and feluccas with their high sails gracefully pass by and the evening we sit around the fire, play backgammon and talk about our upcoming trip to Sudan. We are anxious to hear whether they will have a place for our car on the barge as it was full when we spoke to Salah after we heard that we’ve received our visas.

This is one of the most incredible blogs Ive read in a very long time. The amount of information in here is stunning, like you practically wrote the book on the subject. Your blog is great for anyone who wants to understand this subject more. Great stuff; please keep it up!

"There is something about safari life that makes you forget all your sorrows and feel as if you had drunk half a bottle of champagne - bubbling over with heartfelt gratitude for being alive. One only feels really free when one can go in whatever direction one pleases over the plains, to get to the river at sundown and pitch one's camp, with the knowledge that one can fall asleep
beneath other trees, with another view before one, the next night." -
Karen Blixen - Out of Africa, Kenya
'Of course as I am reading this, I know that you DO get your visas and the container DOES get released, but oh the internal struggle we face even though we should trust (as Hugo does) that God has His hands on all things and is constantly taking care of us.'

    From a Friend:
:) Crazy to think that we are ALL made of blood, bone and water yet we speak in so many tongues that getting along together becomes a massive task within itself.
